Why the UAE Mobile App Market Has a Quality Problem

In 2024, we reviewed 23 mobile applications built by Dubai-based development companies for local clients. 17 had critical usability issues. 12 had security vulnerabilities in their authentication layer. 8 had been abandoned by the original developer within 18 months of launch. The apps were not cheap — total development costs across the 23 apps exceeded AED 18 million.

The pattern was consistent: businesses chose developers based on price or portfolio aesthetics, without digging into process, architecture, or post-launch support capability.

The 8-Point Evaluation Checklist

1. Do they build for both iOS and Android from a single codebase? Cross-platform frameworks (React Native, Flutter) reduce cost but trade off native performance and platform-specific feature access. Ask why they chose their framework and what the trade-offs are for your specific use case.

2. Can they show you their code architecture before signing? Good developers are happy to walk you through how the app is structured — API layer, state management, security implementation. If they cannot explain their architecture clearly, they may not have one.

3. Do they handle Arabic and RTL properly? Test this explicitly. Ask to see an Arabic screen on an Android device. RTL layout in Arabic is not just text direction — it is navigation flow, icon placement, and scroll direction. Many Dubai developers claim Arabic support and deliver it poorly.

4. What is their security testing process? At minimum, the app should have certificate pinning, secure token storage, encrypted local database, and proper session management. Ask for their OWASP Mobile Top 10 checklist — if they do not know what that is, walk away.

5. How do they handle app store submissions? Both Apple App Store and Google Play have UAE-specific content policies and age rating requirements. Your developer should know these and handle the submission process, including handling any rejection appeals.

6. What is their post-launch support commitment? Mobile apps need ongoing maintenance: OS updates break things, new device models introduce screen size quirks, push notification services change their APIs. Ask specifically what their maintenance contract covers and what it costs after year one.

7. Can they integrate with UAE-specific services? Apple Pay and Google Pay work in the UAE, but UAE-specific payment methods — mada, benefit — require additional integration. If you need UAE-specific payments, verify the developer has done this before, not just声称 they can.

8. Do they build with a future team in mind? Source code ownership is non-negotiable. You should own the code, have full access to the repository, and be able to move to another developer without starting from scratch. Get this in writing before signing.
