AI & AutomationDubai's Create AI Agents Championship: What Operators Should Take From It
On 7 October 2026 Sheikh Hamdan launched the Create AI Agents Championship, with more than AED 2.5 million in grants. Most Dubai companies should not enter. They should copy the brief: a working agent on a real job, not another chatbot demo.
On 7 October 2026, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed launched the Create AI Agents Championship. Registration runs through the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy site and closes in December 2026. Entrants submit an AI-agent prototype, a pitch deck, and a demonstration video. Each category winner receives a grant of AED 550,000. One of those winners also receives the AI Agent of the Year title and a further AED 1 million, for a pool above AED 2.5 million. The predecessor, Create Apps, drew more than 15,500 entries from 153 countries and helped launch more than 140 applications.
That is a builder contest. It is not a procurement programme for a clinic, a distributor, or a restaurant group. The search interest is still commercial. Boards in Dubai will hear agentic AI twice this month: once from the championship, and once from vendors attaching themselves to it. The useful response is to steal the evaluation criteria, not the entry form.
What the championship is actually scoring
Public reporting describes autonomous agent systems tied to a real user problem, able to become a product. That is a higher bar than a FAQ bot. A prototype that only chats will look thin next to one that reads a record, takes a permitted action, and shows its work. If you are buying rather than entering, use the same bar on a vendor demo.
- Does the agent touch a system you already run, or only a slide?
- Can a person stop it, and is that stop tested?
- Is the job narrow enough to finish in weeks, not a platform rewrite?
Dubai Chambers is already training more than 14,000 private-sector companies on agentic AI for daily tasks. The championship sits on top of that programme. Training creates demand. It does not install the integration.
Who should enter, and who should not
Enter if you are a product team with a prototype, a demo video, and time before the December close. The grant is for building the venture, not for paying your WhatsApp invoice. Do not enter if the business problem is your own front desk, order line, or invoice file. A contest timeline will not book tomorrow's appointments.
A Dataiku study reported by Gulf News and Khaleej Times on 29 September 2026, run by Harris Poll among CIOs, found 62% of UAE respondents estimating more than 50 agents in production, and 15% estimating more than 500. The same research said only 5% could reliably contain a misbehaving agent across environments within one to two hours. Scale without a stop switch is the failure mode the championship will not fix for you.
The operator version of the brief
Pick one job a customer already starts on WhatsApp or email. Qualify a lead into the CRM. Turn an order message into a priced draft. Answer invoice status from the ERP, without letting the agent edit the tax record. Cap automated turns. Log the handoff. That is an agent a buyer can inspect. It is also the pattern DEWA described on its own services, at a scale you should not copy.
Salesforce's 7 October 2026 Middle East Agentforce release, with prebuilt agents on WhatsApp among other channels, will be the other pitch in the same week. If you are already on Salesforce, trial that path against your own objects. If you are not, do not migrate a CRM to enter an agent conversation. The championship and Agentforce are both distribution events. Your stack is the constraint.
What to ignore in the coverage
Ignore prize-pool headlines as a reason to fund a general assistant. Ignore claims that a winning prototype is production-ready for PDPL or clinic data. A demo video is not a data-processing record. Ignore the idea that 14,000 trained companies equals 14,000 deployed agents. Training is the top of the funnel. The deployment is a software project with a named owner.
If you want the operator version scoped, start from the queue you already staff, not from the contest categories. We build that as a bounded agent on your CRM, ERP, or WhatsApp line.
